Gabbeh rugs are made by Gashghai and Lori nomads who live in the province of Fars around the city of Shiraz. Gabbeh are usually made from hand-spun wool and dyed with natural dyes. In the local language, Gabbeh is the name for a high-pile rug that was probably used for sleeping thousands of years ago. Classic Gabbeh are very colorful in imaginative geometric patterns. Today, modern Gabbeh are mostly found in simple and monochrome designs. But even today, stylized patterns from everyday nomadic life such as goats, camels, dogs, plants or people can still be found in the rugs. The hand-spun wool gives the rugs a grainy but soft surface. Most of the rugs have natural cream, brown and gray tones, but you can also find vibrant yellow, red or blue.
